Choosing the Right Belt Buckle

It is fair to say that men’s belt buckles have always been the perfect combination of function and expression.  Some people might argue that the necktie is a great way for men to express their style, but ties do not really serve a function other than to compliment a dress shirt or suit.  Belt buckles fasten the belt that holds the trousers up.  Function and style all in one.

The first thing to consider when choosing a belt buckle is the size.  It should correspond with your body type.  If you are a robust individual, then a large buckle will look best.  If you have a small frame, then a small buckle is best.  Choosing opposite size buckles to your body type may look out of proportion.  You will also want to make sure the buckle is the right size to fit your belt.  There is no point in having a fabulous buckle on a great belt if the buckle doesn’t keep the belt fastened and the trousers up.  Next, choose a buckle that has an adjustable closure.  Everyone’s weight fluctuates throughout the year, and even between mealtimes, so being able to adjust the belt is vital. 

Belt buckles are fairly inexpensive, so it is possible to have a few designated for different occasions.  Think about how and where you plan to wear the buckles, for example choose a simple design for everyday use.  Perhaps something that reflects a favorite hobby, your profession or even a military background.  For more formal occasions, consider a buckle in gold or silver and a bit more ornate.  Be careful though, unless you are an artist a buckle that is too ornate will look odd and you will probably not wear it very often.  Buckles that are shiny are not necessarily a good choice either.  They are distracting and can look garish. 

Western style belt buckles are gaining popularity again, even among those who have never seated themselves in a saddle.  If you choose a western style buckle as a fashion statement, pair it up with jeans and a western style shirt.  Wearing it any other way is inappropriate and may look as though you are ‘posing’.  Another style of buckle that is making a come-back is the vintage buckle bearing designs indicative of Spanish and Mexican cultures.  You may find ones with engravings of beautiful women and butterflies, or even turquoise stones set in the design. 

If you want one of your belt buckles to be a little different or fun, then the internet is a great place to begin a search.  There are a multitude of whacky designs available, from Jack Daniel’s themed plaques to Superheros.  Some companies even offer a belt buckle designed to hold, and including, a flask.  If you are a firearm enthusiast, perhaps a buckle bearing your favorite gun manufacturer might be to your liking.  Many Civil War buffs like to share their interest by wearing a buckle commemorating the historic event.  A lot of medical personnel choose to wear buckles  showing the iconic Caduceus, even on their off-duty hours.  The same is true for firefighters, only their choice of buckle would probably include a images of a ladder truck or fire hydrant. 

A lot of men like to coordinate their buckle with their money clip.  Since most gentlemen choose to carry only their credit cards and identification in a wallet, the money clip is a great way to keep cash secure and tidy.  Plus, it is another opportunity for expressing a personal style.  Most quality money clips are about the same price as a good buckle, so why not choose matching buckles and money clips for each style of dress?  An everyday set, a special occasion set and perhaps a commemorative set. 

The focal point of any belt is the buckle, it is the first thing people will notice about your dress and likely the most obvious way of expressing your own unique taste.  Think about your choices, take your time and wear them proudly.  After all, your buckle is a symbol of who you are.
